Art Glossary

Below is a short glossary of Art terms, professions, and degree types.
Art Curator
An art curator is the person who sets up and designs how to present an art gallery. They may also work in fairs, museums, exhibits and schools. It is their responsibility to display the art. They also have other duties such as researching art, knowing where the art came from, as well as providing information about the artists and planning art events. Administrative duties of an art curator include budgeting, writing grants and keeping a record of the artwork in the facility they work at. Art curators may also deal with guest interaction as they help manage and promote the museum or gallery they work for. In this profession, art curators can choose to work independently, doing contracted work or work directly in a facility.
Audio Engineering
Also known as acoustical engineering is an area of engineering involved with music. It is the process of recording, manipulating and replicating sound. This may include recording the music, editing, mixing and mastering music. Editing voice, video and adding sound effects are all a part of audio engineering. While much of this is done in the music industry, other areas such as motion pictures and gaming also require audio engineering as well. A career in audio engineering can be started with a degree or vocational program. Gaining hands-on experience is also important, because it is usually the audio engineer who deals with the producers, audio technicians and performers.
Broadcast Production
The field of broadcast production involves working with television, audio and video operations. People in broadcast production use a number of skills, including management, sales and technical knowledge. People who work in the news industry are regarded as part of the broadcasting industry, along with professions in radio and television.  A few core competencies in broadcast production include audio and sound technology, video and engineering.  In addition to that, understanding human relations, mathematics and communication are valuable for working in broadcast production. Knowing lighting techniques, production editing and set design are important aspects of this field. Promotion directors, executive producers and studio engineers are all professions in broadcast production.
Fashion Designers
A fashion designer is someone who makes and decides what clothes and accessories people will wear. They may work for wholesalers, retailers or design firms. Dance studios and theater companies also need fashion designers. Their job is to pick the style that is right for each character; this includes knowing the personality of the character as well as the setting they are in. Fashion designers who work in the fashion industry need to know what trends are in as well as styles that may become popular in the future.  Knowing technical skills and how to us computer aided design (CAD) can be helpful for the career of a fashion designer.
Fashion Merchandising Degree
A degree in fashion merchandising covers a broad spectrum of the fashion industry. Students are taught information on buying, selling and promotion of merchandise. This includes talking to jewelry and clothing companies. Students must be knowledgeable of the details of merchandising. How the fashion world works, the latest trends and the history of fashion are all concepts a fashion merchandising degree should cover. Learning specific information about different fabrics and textiles is also a part of fashion degree coursework.  This type of degree can include a lot of hands-on work as students learn to use and create projects in fashion.
Graphic Design
Graphic design is a form of art that uses media and visuals to communicate a message. This can include using photos, texts and other images to create a graphic. Graphic design is used for making posters, packages, images on websites and advertisements. The layout of a magazine, book cover, and even greeting cards are all apart of graphic design. The type, shape and color, as well as the texture of a graphic are all important aspects of the graphic design. This kind of art is used to convey a message visually, with some text so readers can gain broader information from the material.
Interior Designer
Is a profession for artists who are skilled at decoration and home architecture. They often times give presentations to clients in order to present their creative ideas and plans for interior decoration. Interior designers are in charge of decorating a space to fit a client’s needs. This may can include furniture, texture, cloth and other materials to be used in the room. They can even decide how the layout of a room should be structured. Knowing the safety, health and building requirements are all import concepts for interior designers to be aware of. They may work independently or at an agency.
Music Business Degree
A music business degree provides the education necessary to work in the music industry in a number of jobs. Artist management, copyright and marketing are some of the main concepts covered in a music business program. Learning about publishing and recording music will help students become equipped to work in a number of professions, such as a music publicist, record label producer or artist manager. There are many programs for music business throughout the country, with the big music hubs located in New York, Los Angles, Austin and Nashville. Students who earn this degree do not need to have any musical instrument background, as the program is really a business degree.
Record Producer
A record producer is someone who oversees the production and recording of music. These people work in the music industry with recording artists on albums and songs. A producer can choose to work with a particular artist on a whole album, or singles. Many recording artists pick and change who their record producer is in order to vary their style and sound. A record producer helps decide the song selections, arrangements, editing and mixing of the music. They are usually involved in every creative aspect of the music and collaborate closely with the artist. They are involved in the mastering, CD replication and even the graphic design for the music.
Sound Engineering Technicians
Sound Engineering Technicians can perform a variety of tasks in their jobs. Adding sound effects, setting up sound equipment, mixing sound tracks and making sure all technical equipment is working properly are all areas that sound engineering technicians have experience with.  Due to their diverse skillset, they may work in a variety of places including concert halls, sound and recording studios and even go on tour with artists. Job opportunities can involve working in the motion picture and video industry.  This type of job has a minimum requirement of a professional degree, but a master’s degree can also be earned in this field
Web Design
Web design includes a wide range of skills in the area of website creation. Graphic web design, interface design and experience design are all in the realm of web design. Web design is where coding and software development of the website take place. It also deals with how users experience the site and engage through search engine optimization, or SEO. Web design is part of the broader field of web development. This work is very technical and involves database languages such as XHTML (Extensible Hypertext Markup Language) and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). Many companies hire web designers to create their website.
